IPD and SSR worked collaboratively, performing MEP/FP and Structural Engineering Design on this $55 million project that will completely transform the look of downtown Utica. The Nexus Center at the Utica Memorial Auditorium will become the new home of the American Hockey League’s Utica Comets, Utica College men’s and women’s hockey programs and the Utica Jr. Comets youth hockey organization.
The Nexus Center will have three sheets of ice which can be easily transformed into field-based turf spaces and multi-purpose community event space. The Nexus Center features areas for entertainment, including full-service food and beverage services, and will also include locker rooms, college classroom space, retail space, and other multi-purpose space.
The 170,000 SF recreation and sporting complex supports ice hockey, box lacrosse, soccer, and other field sports, drawing competitive youth teams from across the U.S. and Canada. The Nexus Center is projected to host 24 hockey and 24 lacrosse tournaments each year and is estimated to see more than 320,000 annual visitors.
